Shandong Style Doushabao  (Steamed Wheat Buns Filled with Sweet Bean Paste) is typical Chinese bread or bun. The buns are steamed with a sweet filling inside made from sweet bean paste. Once it is steamed, the buns become so soft and light as a pillow.

It is often called as as "Mantou" in many regions of china but the typical sweet bean paste filled bun is made in Shandong province. There are even many variation to these steamed buns by changing the filling from sweet to savory.

Ingredients

For the wheat bao

    1 Whole Wheat Flour
    1/2 All Purpose Flour (Maida)
    1 Active dry yeast
    1 Sugar

For the filling

    1 Bean Paste,  
    5 Brown Sugar (Demerara Sugar)

Instructions for Shandong Style Doushabao (Steamed Wheat Buns Filled with Sweet Bean Paste)

    We begin making the Shandong Style Bao Zi (Steamed Wheat Buns Filled With Sweet Bean Paste) by activating the dry yeast by adding 1/4 cup of Luke warm water with sugar.

    Then mix it with all the other ingredients to make the  dough in a mixing bowl.Add enough water to get a soft dough consistency. Rest the dough to rise.

    For the filling heat a pan, add the bean paste with sugar and let the sugar get dissolved. Once the sugar is mixed with the paste you will get a soft texture, turn off the heat and let it cool.

    Divide the dough into equal balls, roll it flat into a circle shape, let the thickness be 2 centimeter, then fold any of the two side one over the other, let it overlap. You will get a rectangular shape.

    Add a small portion of the filling at one end of the corner and start rolling along with the filling till the other end. Pinch the open end to secure the dumpling.Rest the dumpling for 5 more minutes.

    Then cut out a butter paper and place it on the steamer. Place all the dumpling without sticking to each other. Steam it for 10 minutes.
